  • Kirk tops NTRO Endorsement List

United States Senator Mark Kirk was the overwhelming choice of the New Trier Republican Organization membership, earning its endorsement with 91 percent of the vote at its endorsement session January 30 in Wilmette.

Kirk, whose roots in New Trier run deep, was joined by a whole slate of candidates NTRO endorsed, including U.S. Congressman Robert Dold (R-10th) for re-election. The other endorsed candidates included State Comptroller Leslie Munger, Wilmette’s Joan McCarthy Lasonde for U.S. Congress in the Ninth District, Benjamin Salzberg for State Senate in the 29th District, former Winnetka Village President Jessica Tucker for State Representative in the 18th District, Commissioner Dan Patlak for Cook County Board of Review (1st District), Christopher E.K. Pfannkuche for State’s Attorney, Diane Shapiro for Clerk of the Circuit Court, and Herb Schumann for Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, as well as David Studenroth and James Allegretti for judge in the 12th Subcircuit. In another vacancy in the 12th subcircuit, NTRO was unable to make an endorsement with two candidates on the ballot: Steven Kozicki and Alex Kaplan.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) was the preference of NTRO with 45 percent of the vote.

Saturday’s endorsement session was hosted by NTRO, but the Evanston, Maine Niles, and Northfield township organizations also participated. Evanston, Maine and Northfield townships also endorsed Senator Kirk.

Kirk’s involvement with NTRO goes back to his teenage years when he volunteered as a New Trier High School student from Kenilworth. Since then, he has been part of NTRO as Chief of Staff to Rep. John Porter, as 10th District Congressman serving most of New Trier Township, and as a U.S. Senator since November 2010.

Other NTRO members earned endorsements, starting with Congressman Robert Dold, running for re-election in the 10th District. In the Ninth District, longtime NTRO volunteer Joan Lasonde was endorsed in her challenge of extremist Jan Schakowsky. Jessica Tucker, the former Winnetka Village President, has been an NTRO member and served as a delegate to the Illinois Republican Convention in 2012.

The GOP ticket will feature three extraordinary women: Joan Lasonde (left), running for Congress in the Ninth District; State Comptroller Leslie Munger (center); and former Winnetka Village President Jessica Tucker, running for State Representative in the 18th District.
